Federated Mountain Club Executive
You will know by reading the March Bulletin and a recent mailing to your club that it is that time of year when nominations for FMC Executive are called for.
The Central Region covers a big chunk of tramping country with, substantial DOC investment and a good number of active clubs. At the moment this area is covered on the FMC Executive by Owen Cox & myself, both living on Kapiti Coast. We would really like some support from people in Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui and Hawkes Bay.
Robin McNeill – outgoing President – has written in the March Bulletin about what is involved being on the Executive and you can always ring or email one of us to find out more.
Nominations close on 8 April and the only requirement is that you be a member of one of our clubs, are nominated by a member club (any club) and of course agree to the nomination. Remember clubs can nominate people in other clubs !
I urge you to give some thought to this. You might be interested in standing yourself or there could be someone in your club or someone you know in another club.
This year the new election procedure will be used. Every club will be asked to vote instead of giving a delegate vote to the few at the AGM – which only half our clubs ever did. We hope that this will also encourage clubs to take a more active interest in what FMC is doing on their behalf.
It is a democratic procedure and while I have put my name up again I would love to be joined by a few more from around this area – and I wouldn’t complain if I lost my place on Executive to two or three people from this area .
Regards, Phil Glasson

Just a quick note to let you all know what we have been up to over March. We spent 5 very wet days at Hinerua hut doing some hut work and track cutting. The track to the tops has been cut and to the top of the slip heading towards Smiths Stream, the track to the park boundary heading towards the Tukituki river was cut as well. We made a start on the track towards the park boundary heading towards the airstrip on Alder road, hopefully we will finish this track by the end of April only a couple of days work left.
The track from Potae highpoint towards Lake Colenso hut down what some know as Potae creek has been cut and remarked.
Monthly hut checks have been completed at Sunrise and Rangi huts, with firewood replenished at Sunrise hut and hopefully at Rangi hut by the end of May.
Top Maropea hut has had a make-over by a contractor, the hut has been raised and a new fireplace base made, the track by the hut has been modified by a small digger to allow water to run off away from the hut site, the heli-pad has also been enlarged to accommodate larger helicopters and to make landing and take-offs safer.
For May we have planned to complete track cutting between Ruahine and Shutes huts and complete the tracks and some hut work at Smiths Stream hut. Hopefully we can recut the old track up the ridge to Hinerua hut instead of battling your way up the creek and slip to Hinerua hut.
If anyone has any questions or updates after your trips please let me know or if you are going somewhere ring me as some huts may require new hut book and I can get one or some to you. Until next month enjoy your tramp or hunt and stay safe. Thanks Ken.
