Track Cutting – Northern Ruahines
Quick update: Contractors and DoC staff have been in the Kawhatua area over the last couple of weeks. Track has been cut from Kawhatau Base (KB) to Colenso high point, KB down the old river road, KB to cableway new track cut. KB to McKinnon and Crow Hut track cut. KB to McKinnon poled route has 15 new pickets. McKinnon Hut to Kawhatau River track cut, Crow Hut to Rongotea high point cut.
At this stage probably won’t be back in the hills until after the roar.
If you are up that way, please feel free to provide feedback.
Cheers

Kaweka Forest Park, Huts and Tracks
The forest park suffered in the August 2016 storms, with many select areas at a certain altitude decimated. Beech and kanuka trees were blown over or snapped. In a recent recce of the KFP, the following tracks and huts were investigated.
Makahu to Rocks Ahead, via Back Ridge, then up to Tira Lodge. From Tira Lodge to Ballard Hut. All tree damage has been cleared from the tracks. There seem to be no DoC track markers from the junction to Back Ridge Biv, down to Rocks Ahead Hut. Old Permalot markers seem to have been re-used here and there. On the track up from RA, orange markers appear again.
Rocks Ahead Hut has been re-roofed and repainted and a new step put in the vestibule area. It is looking good and tidy. See picture below. Tira Lodge has also had a paint job, and tidy-up/inspection. Also looking good, see picture below. Maybe this is all in advance of the roar?
If any members have information on the huts and tracks in the Kaweka Forest Park, please pass this onto the website editor. Many thanks, Julia.
