MacIntosh Hut to Lawrence Road, Saturday 4 June 2011. Map: BJ37
Sixteen club members gathered at EIT and headed for the MacIntosh car park. We had an unfavourable weather forecast again, but everyone was keen to get out there. Arriving by 8.15 at the car park, we had soon sorted the drivers to take our two vehicles around to the Lawrence Road car park. Four trampers went with them and did their walk from the Lawrence Road bridge.
The day was cloudy and cooler than the recent mild coastal climate, providing comfortable conditions for our day out. But low cloud and fog obscured the views as we made our way steadily towards the MacIntosh Hut and a welcome smoko, just before ten, along with the usual friendly banter.
Soon we were on our way steadily uphill. The wind thundered through the tops of the pinus contorta. Evidence of a recent tree being ‘topped’ lay beside the track, which followed the ridge line dropping down into the Donald River, beside which we had an early lunch. A brief shower meant some coats were donned, but they were quickly discarded as we made our way uphill again. Then we were down to the Tutaekuri River, queueing to cross the footbridge and make our way up the hill to the top Lawrence Road car park, for a change of clothes and an early finish.
Rosemary showed us all how to ‘plank’ in the bonnet of Paul’s vehicle. Well done, Rosemary (picture to follow).
Thanks to Geoff and Paul, our transfer drivers. Everyone enjoyed the day.
Trampers: Julia Mackie, Jude Paton, Sue Marshall, Sue Titter, Denise Payne, Rosemary Jeffery, Colleen Perreau, Ted Angove, Geoff Donkin, Paul Exeter, Matt Green, Murray Goss, John Dobbs, Colin McNatty, James Farrell and reporter John Gray
