Banner Photo: The views across to Mt Erin and Te Mata Peak
It was a cloudy day, perfect for a tramp that’s mostly over farmland with no tree cover. We arrived at Kahuranaki Station not long after 8.30 and caught up with the farm manager, who told us to follow the limestone track and that it might be windy on the top.
Unfortunately there were two limestone tracks to choose from, one of which started as gravel – but it was in the wrong direction so we changed course to get onto the right road.
We made our way through a welcoming party of cows and calves and then it was onwards and upwards, staying on the farm track. The views of the hills were stunning along the way: Mt Erin to our immediate left then further over was Te Mata Peak. A few in the group had done Triple Peaks, so were in familiar territory.
As we got higher, it became sheep country. They were very curious, probably hoping we’d move them onto greener pastures. It took exactly 90 minutes to get to the trig for morning tea with views.
Before heading back down, we checked out the buildings and towers. Sue mentioned that there was a Maori grave site on the tops, and out of bounds. We didn’t get to see or recognise it.
It took us around an hour to get back down, following the same route we came up on. It being too early to return home, we made a stop at the Red Bridge cafe for refreshments and then it was back to town.
Trampers: Alison Greer, Di Reid, Christine Briasco, Kate Fuller, Barbara Edmead, Ted Angove, Colin Jones, Sue Martin, Tony Pluymers, Sue Gribble, Denise Bavidge and reporter Marie Deroles
