The Kaweka J Experience delivers for first-timers

February 11, 2023 by Gaye Ebbett Leave a Comment

Kaweka J, Kaweka FP, Saturday 11 February 2023

Kaweka J was a first for some of us. The zig-zag climb was OK and we took the Trials Spur path up. Taking care not to miss the sign, we followed the path leading off-track down to the Dominie bivouac where we had agreed to meet up.

We continued on up Makahu spur. I loved the climb, open and rocky, often sharp underfoot and unstable.

Mist and cloud came and went a number of times, but generally we were lucky with the weather. We turned left at the top and walked to the Kaweka J peak and then back and over the tops to the North Kaweka peak where we stopped for lunch.

The views were amazing and just being there amongst steep ranges is pretty impressive. It was a great day out – and almost unbelievable that Cyclone Gabrielle was heading our way, landing just two days later. Thanks to John, who piloted the can and organised the tramp.

Trampers: John Dobbs, Gaye Gasser, Julian Phillips, Marie Deroles, Jane Thomson, Kate Fuller, Campbell Living, Ali Hollington, Geoff Donkin and reporter Gaye Ebbett

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Interested in joining us?

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
