Longview Hut and back down Daphne Track, Ruahiune Forest Park

A beautiful sunny day saw eight of us, led by Johnny Dobbs, heading up to Longview Hut. The track is nicely graded to near the top of the range, and then there are a few wee steep ups and downs. It looked like a promising day.
But the wind was on the prowl, and near the tops we were staggering against some mighty gusts. The tussocks looked amazing, swirling this way and that. I lost my hat; once blown off, it was a goner.
The wind isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so Jude and a few of the others went back down and headed over to Awatere Hut instead. There they met a hunter who demonstrated his sika-calling device while they ate their lunches.
Four of us made it to Longview Hut, and then walked north along the top of the ridge to Daphne Track. The track is marked periodically by cairns.
We also met some hunters. There are a lot about at the moment, due to the roar.
Everyone met up around 3pm and were at the Tikokino Pub by 4pm, for coffees and teas.
Trampers: Johnny, Jude, Ali, Rosemary, Sue, Denise, Viv and reporter Hilary
