Helisika Incident:
Mt Cameron Tramp, 8 April 2017. An apology

The Napier Tramping Club sincerely apologises to Helisika for trespassing on the Maori land at Te Iringa/ Mt Cameron block.

This club tramp was scheduled in November 2016. It is the club’s responsibility to ensure any permission required is obtained from private and trust landowners prior to the tramp date. This did not happen with respect to the tramp on 8 April.

The normal protocol (which has been scrupulously observed for many years) should have prevailed and, lacking permission, the club should have changed its tramp destination.

On meeting one of a hunting party at Mt Cameron and being advised that it was a Helisika block, the group should have made a decision to turn around and leave the block without any delay.

We deeply regret this transgression and the subsequent poor decisions made that day. They were not our normal club practice. We fully accept Helisika’s position: that this was a case of trespass, that our presence had a deleterious affect on hunters’ enjoyment of the block, and that the club’s actions were irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

We will ensure that the full text of Helisika’s letter of complaint is circulated to all club members.

Such an incident will not be repeated, anywhere. The club accepts full responsibility for ensuring that any required permissions are obtained.

President, Napier Tramping Club

Track Cutting – North Eastern Ruahines
Track-cutting contractors and DoC staff will be flying in to the North-eastern Ruahines on 15 May. Contractors will be based at the Unknown camp site, Maropea Forks and Otukota, cutting the linking tracks. DoC staff will fly into Iron Bark to cut tracks and install new signs for the old Maropea swing bridge area and do some work on the slips near Colenso.

Please let us know if any one needs equipment etc taken in or if they know about any issues.

Cheers
Tumau Hoggart

Shaun Ruddle has started as Senior Ranger, Rec/Historic, and has got straight into the role. If you need to get hold of Shaun – either on something specific or a general catch-up you can reach him via the RUG forum or email sruddle@doc.govt.nz or phone 06 3509700.

NTC Committee Election
At the AGM on 4 May 2017, all the current incumbents were re-elected. Also, a new member to the committee was nominated and appointed, Bruce Hodgson.

Alison Greer, Club Captain advised that this would be her last year in this position after serving 10 years. During the 2017/18 year her role will be spread amongst other club members, to ensure a safe and easy handover.

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
