We got through the day with a little support from iPad GPS

May 24, 2017 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Makahu Saddle to Middle Hill Hut, Wednesday 24 May 2017
Map BJ37.

We left in rain in the rental van and two cars, but by 9am it was cool and cloudy. A large group took cars to Pink’s Hut. The track cutters have done a great job since the big snowfall and wind damage.

And down the steep gorge

The walk was up and down to Kaweka Flats Bivvy, where we stopped for a rest and a bite to eat. Then we carried on to the big gorge – and what a climb that was!

We arrived at Middle Hill Hut at 1pm for lunch and several of the group from the Pink’s Hut end met us there. Kelly from DoC was also at Middle Hill, doing the kiwi count.

After lunch, we carried on and arrived at the van at 3pm. Although it rained in Napier, we didn’t even get a spit.

The GPS did not spot the fish

Rosemary and Gossy got us through the day using the GPS on their iPads.

Trampers: Kelvin Shaw, Vic Bullock, Rosemary Jeffrey, Viv Bramley, Ted Angove, Paul Exeter, Tony Pluymers, Bruce Hodgson, Marie Deroles, John Stairmand, Murray Goss, Lynette Morgan, Amy Hutchinson, Juliet Gillick, Sally Woods, Peter Slagter, Denise Payne and reporter Simon Hill

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
