Spirits (almost) undampened, four make it to Kiwi Saddle

The forecast didn’t look great when 11 brave trampers left the Lakes car park. It was drizzling and misty most of the way up to the trig. Slowly we diminished in numbers, as some decided not to go all the way to the hut. We had morning tea just past the Cameron car park turn-off.

Only four decided to carry on to have lunch at the hut so we put on our raincoats, gloves and hats. The rain never came and there was hardly any wind as we made our way down the scree.

After a leisurely lunch and with fewer clothes on, we headed up the hill. The mist had cleared somewhat so we could see down to the Ngaruroro River. It was an easy walk back and about 20 minutes from the van, the rain started.

The remainder of our group were all huddled up in the warm van. Not much fun trying to get into dry clothes in the rain. Fortunately, our van had a lift-up back door so some of us managed to shelter under that. We were on our way home by 3pm, so another great day and the weather wasn’t as bad as we thought it might be.

Trampers: Kelvin Shaw, Dorothy Sole, Murray White, Bruce Hodgson, Tony Plymers, Ted Angove, Lynette Morgan; to Kiwi Saddle Hut, John Burrell, John Bennett, Chrie Le Lievre, and reporter Rosemary Jeffery

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
