Spirits undampened by drizzle

June 22, 2015 by Rosemary Jeffery Leave a Comment

Day tramp to Kiwi Saddle Hut, Kaweka FP, Saturday June 20, 2015
Map: BJ37

Only six of us decided to go to Kiwi Saddle Hut. We set off about 8.30am from the Lakes car park. It was just starting to drizzle so some of us put on jackets and headed up Mt Kuripapango which was sheltered from the wind; but once out onto the ridge line, the temperature dropped dramatically and we all put more clothes on.

Dorothy decided not to go on and leisurely wandered back down. We encountered gale-force winds and sleet as we made our way up to the Cameron Hut track junction and then down to Kiwi Saddle Hut, where we met up with the weekenders having a cuppa.

While we had our lunch, it poured down and we didn’t look forward to venturing out again. We eventually decided we had better head back, so up the hill in the wind and rain we went and arrived back to the cars at 2.30pm. Getting changed in the rain while trying to put on our dry clothes was a bit of an exercise. But all in all, a great day to be out in the mountains.

Trampers: Dorothy Sole, Sue Martin, John Dobbs, Graeme Taylor, Ryan McMahon and reporter Rosemary Jeffery

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
