Blowhard Bush, Wednesday 7 August 2024
Banner Photo: A cave of sorts, but amazing rock formations. Taken by Di Reid
Five trampers travelled to Blowhard Bush. The weather was beautiful for Di, John, Selina, Lou and Kate, though we had to avoid icy patches due to a heavy frost.
Many native trees – rimu, kahikatea and others – were huge with massive buttress roots, epiphytes and perching plants growing on them. On one track, a few trees had fallen so we had to clamber over them.
The huge rocks covered in green moss were amazing, and there were big gaps under and between them. Apparently a family lived in a cave for a short while near the beginning of a track, but we couldn’t find it (though there was a notice about the family).
We had lunch back at the car park then walked another loop. Di managed to photograph a bird that was following us along the track. It was a really enjoyable day thanks to great weather and the amazing native trees.
