Gezina Elzinga – Bequest to Napier Tramping Club

On Saturday 27 July, Doug, Di, Alison and John D had a workbee at the Gezina seat.

Before, facing east

Gezina was born in the Netherlands and moved to New Zealand at the age of four with her parents and two brothers.  She joined the Napier Tramping Club, and enjoyed her time in the outdoors.   Sadly Gezina was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009, from which she died in April 2012. She made a bequest to the Napier Tramping Club, and with help from the Napier City Council, we were granted permission to erect a seating area in the Tironui Reserve.

It is a substantial seat, which can be used by anyone, especially those who live nearby in Napier and Taradale. It is a good asset for the community – we have created a spot in this reserve which can be enjoyed by those who enjoy the exercise and the views it provides when walking in the area.

Wilding pine update

Graham Leech reports:

Our next volunteer day is Wednesday 4 September, probably to Kohinga. I’ll contact you closer to the time to confirm numbers and logistics but you may like to put these dates in the diary.

It has not been completely quiet while Giles and I have been away overseas as we have now received our PanPac grant and so we will have our own equipment for these next trips.  Jeroen (one of our Afoot instructors) has been up to The Lakes with some students he tutors and they cleared 60 pines a few weeks ago.

Hypothermia

Now’s the season to think about the risks of hypothermia and what to do if it strikes. We have a Powerpoint slideshow about this for downloading, plus a chart in PDF format which you might like to print out and keep in your first aid kit.

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
