Photo contests are coming up
Our club photo competition is on 10 September.

- Above bushline
- Below bushline
- Club life
- Water scenery, stream, river, sea
- Flora, fauna, creatures, birds of the bush
- Oh Bugga!
- Historic – taken before 2020
We need 6×4 photo prints, no more than two per category. No titles or names; it’s secret stuff! Everyone at the meeting can vote and there are yummy prizes.
Plus, you can enter the FMC competition:
- Above bush line with human element (ABW)
- Above bush line without human element (ABN)
- Below bush line with human element (BBW)
- Below bush line without human element (BBN)
- Historic (HIS)
- Native flora, faune and fungi (NFF)
- Long exposure (LE)
Please put your FMC entries on a USB stick with the title for the image and the abbreviation for the correct category. You can enter as many photos as you like, in any category. You do not need to enter all of them. The last day to hand your entries to Sue is Sunday 6 September.
Remember to take your camera or phone when you’re out and about, and have a dig in your albums.
Hawke’s Bay Wilding Pine Control update
The next trip will be on a Sunday to allow all those hard-working warriors with weekday jobs the chance to enjoy the day. The target is either Makahu or The Lakes (depending on final numbers) to check for wilding pines that may have popped up while no one was looking.
The date is Sunday 16 August. Bring a range of clothing as the weather can be unpredictable. The meeting place depends on the confirmed location – either outside Omahu Urupā / cemetery (leaving any cars on the opposite side of the road) at 7.50am for an 8am departure; or in Taradale (Osier Road, outside number 22 at 7.50am for an 8am departure).
Email Alan Lee (possumsnest@xtra.co.nz) by Wednesday 12 August to confirm you will be attending, and add your phone number to the response. Alan will be trusty trustee with all the gear and coordination on the day.
Sorry, but subs are (slightly) up
Rising costs are affecting everything, including our club subscriptions. At the AGM in May, members approved modest increases in subscriptions as well as the termination of associate membership. Here are the details:
$60 for a single member and FMC card
$85 for two members at the same address, with one FMC card
$103 for two members at the same address, with two FMC cards

Track closures
Some tracks and car parks in the Kaweka Forest Park have been closed since mid-February. The closures may be in effect for up to five months. Details, including a map, are here
Pan Pac Forest Products has posted this message on Facebook:
Kia ora everyone, due to a combination of some very wet weather and operational delays, the Kaweka (Twin) Lakes car park and Mackintosh Track will remain closed until 15 September while we complete harvesting activities in the area. We had originally hoped to have works completed by the end of this month but have unfortunately been delayed.
The public can still access Kuripapango Hill and the Tūtaekurī River Track via the temporary car park further back along the road, but Mackintosh Track remains closed.
We have worked hard to facilitate keeping access open as much as possible, with friendly track wardens in place full time during operational hours to ensure safe passage on the Kuripapango Hill and Tūtaekurī River tracks. The wardens will remain in place to safely escort walkers through active work areas where required.
Owners of PLBs: Please read this!
This guidance applies to anyone taking their own PLB on a club tramp.
The club’s PLBs link the national Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) to our group’s contact, Brian Mackie. RCC personnel immediately call him if a club PLB is triggered, to ascertain group numbers, names and so on. When Brian is alerted by RCC, he tries to contact friends and relatives about the incident and keeps them updated.
But if a tramp member sets off their own beacon, the RCC will only contact the emergency person named for that PLB.
It’s essential that, before you go on a club tramp with a personal PLB, you tell your emergency PLB contact that if your unit is activated on a club tramp and they receive a call from the RCC, they should:
- Answer all questions, and then
- Tell the RCC caller that this is a Napier Tramping Club event and that they should also contact Brian Mackie on 021 613 914 for further information about the party.
