Top Maropea Hut, Ruahine FP, Saturday August 1, 2015

The wind was atrocious. We could hear it raging from the car park at North Block Road, so the chances of us getting to Top Maropea Hut would be nigh-on impossible if the sound was our yardstick.
So we enjoyed the walk up to Sunrise Hut, and yes; beyond that, it was bad. We met Marc Marchal just leaving Sunrise Hut, who said his beanie hat had been blown off when he tried to check out the track above the hut to Armstrong Saddle. He had retrieved it, but that convinced him walking beyond Sunrise Hut was not possible. We all poked our heads above the ridge, and Julia took a photo of the group. The wind was galeforce and cold. We quickly high-tailed it back down to the car park, and then to the Sawyers Arms for a coffee. Trampers: John Russell, Graeme Taylor, Rosemary Jeffery, Alison Greer, Simon Hill, Karin Lenhart, Paul Exeter, Jude Paton, Keith James, Juliet Gillick, Geoff Donkin and reporter Julia Mackie
Sue Martin says
It looked miserable. I have tried Top Maropea Hut several times and not made it due to wind. Loved the photos! Sometimes difficult to imagine how cold when we are in bathing in 28 deg. In Porto.
