Our planned trip was to Taraponui via Bell Rock, so we walked through the bush up the Bell Rock track until we arrived out in the open. But the wind was so strong and it was just starting to rain, so the decision was made to not go on any further.
We retraced our steps back down to where the van was parked, got back in and went to Boundary Stream for morning tea. We decided to walk to Shines Falls and back. It was very muddy in places and the stream which we normally hop over and keep our feet dry was flowing quite swiftly so several of us borrowed poles to make our way across the rocks which, even though covered in moss, were not slippery.
About noon, it was agreed that we would not get all the way to the falls so we stopped and had lunch in the rain under what shelter we could find. As we set off, it stopped raining (of course) and we had an easy walk back out. Another great day in the bush with the raincoats in and out of our packs all day.Trampers: Alison Greer, Ali Hollington, Hannah Munro, Nonoha Kikuchi, Juliet Gillick, Sue Martin, John Bennett, Jude Paton, Charlotte Breen, John Russell and reporter Rosemary Jeffery.
