Waimarama to Karamea, Wednesday 2 October 2024

Elly led this trip down the coast, rock-hopping to Karamea, once named Red Island.
The sun was partly shining with a soft northerly on our tail. Occasionally we would get a reprieve from rock-hopping and be able to walk on a little bit of sand. We had one section where we got our feet wet, on the outgoing tide and the incoming one on our return.
The feature of this trip was the unusually large spherical boulders which are concretions, a geological curiosity found in sediments. And this coastline is oozing sediment with many an active slump moving onto the foreshore from the land. It’s a great place for fossil hunters. And seals.
It was a two-hour walk to Karamea, where we had a quick lunch and then a stroll back to Waimarama.
