Our 52nd Anniversary dinner on 1 October
Our Anniversary dinner this year was at Sri Thai in Port Ahuriri, where we enjoyed Asian food and good chat. The Jonathan Seagull cup was awarded to Di Reid. As she is currently tramping in Japan, it will be presented to her at the special club meeting on Thursday 8 October.
Te Puia track hut and campsites open for bookings
Te Puia Lodge transferred to the DoC Hut booking system on 1 October. DoC says the changes reflect the high use of Te Puia Lodge and the costs to maintain it. See the DoC website for ‘Fees and Bookings’.
Track re-opening
Some tracks and car parks in the Kaweka Forest Park have been closed since mid-February, but Pan Pac Forest Products reopened the Twin Lakes car park and the Mackintosh Hut car park and access in September.
A new, fully waymarked shortcut on the Tutaekuri access track is also open. The shortcut diverts users away from future operations, enabling the track to remain open during forestry activities such as pruning and thinning.
Extra club meeting 8 October – Megan Dimozantos is guest speaker
Megan Dimozantos is coming to talk to the club on Thursday 8 October. This date is not our usual meeting date so please put it in your calendar. We’ve booked the pavilion where we usually have our meetings.
Megan was the president of Federated Mountain Clubs and now leads and manages hut maintenance and rebuilds in the North Island. She is a LandSAR volunteer and a member of the FMC executive. She can often be found in the hills, pack rafting, tramping, mountain-biking, skiing or wielding a hammer or chainsaw.
We’ve invited members of the Heretaunga Tramping Club to join us too.
Owners of PLBs: Please read this!
This guidance applies to anyone taking their own PLB on a club tramp.
The club’s PLBs link the national Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) to our group’s contact, Brian Mackie. RCC personnel immediately call him if a club PLB is triggered, to ascertain group numbers, names and so on. When Brian is alerted by RCC, he tries to contact friends and relatives about the incident and keeps them updated.
But if a tramp member sets off their own beacon, the RCC will only contact the emergency person named for that PLB.
It’s essential that, before you go on a club tramp with a personal PLB, you tell your emergency PLB contact that if your unit is activated on a club tramp and they receive a call from the RCC, they should:
- Answer all questions, and then
- Tell the RCC caller that this is a Napier Tramping Club event and that they should also contact Brian Mackie on 021 613 914 for further information about the party.
