A tale of two tramps

Eleven of us headed up to the Kawekas in the van to explore the Middle Hill area. Juliet and Fiona met up with us after crossing the slightly flooded ford on Makahu Road, at the Middle Hill car park as they were heading into Makino Hut for the weekend.

The climb out of the first gorge

We regrouped at the track junction just before Middle Hill Hut for morning tea. From there, Robyn, Sue G, Di, Doug, Geoff and Alison headed off to take on the Three Gorges and then to follow the Makino track back to the road. The other group consisting of Margaret, Rosemary, Shona, Gordon and Gaye carried on up to Middle Hill Hut.

The plateau between the first and second gorge

The Three Gorges track showed little evidence of the heavy rain experienced by Napier earlier in the week and the three main streams were easily crossed. After each gorge, there were plateau areas giving you time to recover, before the next descent and ascent. We all met back at the van around 4pm. The day was sunny with a slight cool breeze on the exposed parts of the track.

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
