Juliet, Sue Martin, Simon and Doug went into Middle Hill Hut then up Camp Spur to Whetu. We arrived at Middle Hill car park at 0820 and it took one hour and forty minutes to reach Middle Hill Hut, with Simon setting a rather brisk pace.
After a short break, we headed up Camp Spur. The day had started sunny and clear but when we emerged from the bush line, the clouds had rolled in and there was light drizzle. Undeterred, three of us pushed on up the track to the junction below Whetu.
From there, you could just see Venison Tops through the mist away to the west. This was to have been the destination of the (cancelled) weekend tramp. We returned to the shelter of the bush to have lunch, then went back down the spur to Middle Hill. We arrived back in Napier at 5.40 pm.
