Howletts Hut, Ruahine FP, Sat/Sun 19-20 Sept 2020. Map: BL36 Howletts Hut is the highest hut in the Ruahine Range, at 1365m, and a great destination. With three of the four having never been before, there was some trepidation in the group. On the drive down, the range behind Ashley Clinton looked a little stormy,… [Read More]

Daphne Hut, Ruahine FP, Saturday 19 September 2020 The forecast for the Ruahine Ranges was for a cold, sunny and cloudy morning with light precipitation in the afternoon. As soon as the four of us parked the car at the Daphne car park on Kashmir Road, light sleet fell so we had to make a… [Read More]

The forecast, however, was for overcast skies and scattered rain in the ranges, and that turned out to be spot-on. Eleven intrepid trampers set… [Read More]

It was tough climbing through the snow above the bushline

August 24, 2014 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Saturday/Sunday August 23/24, 2014 Howletts Hut, Ruahine FP. BL36 We had the kind permission from the farmer to cross his farmland to take the old ridge track up to the main ridge track. This track is still discernable, but falling away in a few places only. The bush is luscious and dense. Little light penetrates… [Read More]

Howletts Hut, overlooking Tarn Ridge in the background

Howletts Hut, Ruahine Forest Park, Saturday/Sunday 27/28 July 2013 Map: BL36 At our last club meeting, the guest speaker commented on trampers who were only interested in the times they had achieved in getting from A to B with no time spent looking around. I think that a lot of club members were thinking of… [Read More]

Daphne Hut, Saturday August 15 2009 Trampers: Alex Thomason (leader), Colin McNatty, Murray White, Geoff Donkin, Ray Slavin, John Dobbs and Denise Payne (who kept the boys in line!) About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Interested in joining us?

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
