A good winter workout

July 18, 2018 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Parks Peak Hut, Ruahine FP, Wednesday 18 July 2018. Parks Peak Hut is always a good choice of destination at this time of year. At 1300m, cold weather is guaranteed – but bush cover for most of the way provides protection from nasty, biting winds. A van and carload of Napier Tramping Club members tested… [Read More]

Sentry Box Hut an historic gem

June 8, 2016 by Kelvin Shaw Leave a Comment

Sentry Box to Park Peaks Hut, Wednesday June 8 2016 Banner pix: The views into the Mangleton Valley The day started with frost and a temperature of 1˚, but there was a forecast at Napier of 18˚. Roll on the sunrise and a rise in temperature, we thought. Murray gave us a practical demonstration on… [Read More]

Another easy walk in the Ruahine Forest Park

September 12, 2015 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Parks Peak Hut, Ruahine FP, Saturday September 12, 2015. Map: BK37 Due to the seriously bad weather forecast, we changed the scheduled tramp to Parks Peak Hut. We would be sheltered from the high winds and the cold southerly blast. And so we set off up the Sentry Box track to the ridge, from Mangleton… [Read More]

Nothing beats the warmth of the fire at Parks Peak Hut

September 6, 2014 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Saturday September 6, 2014. Parks Peak Hut, Ruahine FP. Map BK37 See more pictures on our Facebook page. There were seven of us on this tramp. Considering the weather forecast for heavy rain all day, and the rugby match between the ABs and Pumas in Napier on that evening, I am surprised that we got… [Read More]

Lazing in the sun at Upper Makaroro Hut

January 26, 2014 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Upper Makaroro Hut, Saturday/Sunday, January 25/26 2014 Map: BK37 We start with three trampers on this weekend tramp. We park at the Yeoman’s Historic Mill car park, and cross the Makaroro River in our sandals. We hide these, and put on our boots. This is to make the tramp more enjoyable, as walking with wet… [Read More]

The blue sky day at Parks Peak Hut

Parks Peak Hut, Wednesday July 31 2013 Map: Tikokino BK37 The new Parks Peak Hut was surrounded by patches of snow and bathed in glorious sunshine when we arrived round noon. The main party had negotiated the steep, 740m climb from Sentry Box Hut in just less than three hours, taking time out to marvel… [Read More]

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Interested in joining us?

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
