Banner Pix: Squeezing inside Black Birch Bivouac
It was drizzle, and the van was full, with around 12 of us rising early to venture out, stretch our legs and have a little social time in the woods.
Whittle Road was an easy drive… no potholes or loose, gravelly bits. The road forks, so we took the left hand one (Lotkow Rd) and drove down to the road end, where there’s a place to large enough to turn the van. The track up to Black Birch bivvy starts about a kilometre north of this.
The drizzle was not welcoming but, slowly, more and more joined the party to climb up the hill and walk through to Little’s Clearing via Black Birch bivvy. Kelvin drove the van around to the Makahu entrance and others tramped in from this direction.
Everyone met up at the bivvy. It’s tiny, with an outside fire pit and a toilet. We squeezed in to have our morning tea – and not everyone fitted. The bush was wet but the paths are wide and open so this was a good tramp for a drizzly day – all over and done with in a few hours.
Trampers: Bruce Hodgson, Kelvin Shaw, Rosemary Jeffery, Sue Gribble, Gordon Tapp, John Burrell, Murray White, Margaret Palmer, Dorothy Sole, John Dobbs, Vic Bullock and reporter Hilary Heath-Caldwell
