RUG Minutes, 18 February 2019
Kia Ora RUG,
Just an email update to advise that we will have a team in at Iron Gate completing some tree work around the hut. This will open up the site and assist with the positioning of the new hut. This will occur from 7th to 9th March. The track from the Hut to the Oroua Car park will also have the windfalls cut back.
The new build start date is yet to be confirmed, however will be due in late April/May. Will keep you posted.
Regards

Kylie Biv, Maintained by a community agreement (i.e. not DoC). Herewith Andrew Mercer’s maintenance report.
Last weekend Phil, Gareth and I flew into Kylie to biv to complete a measure up for a BCT bid due on the 11th. We ticked off a couple of jobs while we were there.
We lifted levelled and straightened the hut before replacing a few of the piles. We concreted in the new piles interesting to see it had no concrete in the original holes. We kept the height similar because its lasted 48 years without blowing away (no tie downs) there no point messing with a design that works. We also added a heap of roofing screw, as the nail were popping up, in fact we would have added more to hold the tin down but we ran out. We also riveted the iron together where it was parting, and sealed with silicon were we could. At the overlap water was being sucked up between the sheets of cladding through capillary action, this is where the worse of the rust was. I’m not sure if our actions will be able to stop the rust, it may need a new roof soon to ensure it lasts for another 48 years
There are still a few jobs to do.
Dig the hill away from the hut
Cut the tussock and leather wood back
Level and re pile the water tank it’s on a lean
Clean and repaint the inside
Fix the holes in the floor
Replace the window (rotten wood and a big split across the sill)
Main bearer are getting very soft in the corners were they meet the piles and have no protective flashings. One side and back of the hut were under ground due to vege, soil etc, those edges of tin are damaged too.
Kylie biv was built in 1971, the hut book goes back to 1997. Lowest visitor count for the year was 12 and the highest was 29 but most years were in the 20s. Warren Dykes spent a week there in 1997 repairing and improving. I’m guessing he put in the 12 mm ply lining and the water tank. Hut book records the door as jamming but we had no issues so we didn’t fiddle with it.
It’s not painted blue for the ducks in the river below, or for prostate cancer awareness. It is painted blue because my son age 11 picked the colours, he was coming into help but got very crook at that last moment.
Does any one know why it’s called Kylie biv?
