The view to Waipawa Saddle, with the tops in cloud, and horizontal tussock

A quick trip to Sunrise

February 13, 2013 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

Sunrise Hut, Wednesday February 13, 2013. Map: BK36

The trip planned was to Sunrise Hut, Armstrong Saddle, Te Atuaoparapara, Waipawa Saddle and Waipawa River. The clouds hanging over the ranges did not look promising, but we continued with the plan.

The view south-west to Waipawa Saddle, with the tops in cloud, and horizontal tussockThere was a light drizzle on leaving the car park at the start; however, jackets were soon off after entering the bush. One hour and twenty three minutes later, I entered Sunrise Hut, three minutes more than my best time. I had realised that this might be the only exercise that I would get as the cloud on the tops and wind persisted.

Three of us checked it out and agreed that the wind and cloud would make this a tramp too far. Back in the hut, we all had a leisurely break, and decided to go to Triplex Hut for lunch. So, back down, we all reached the hut for a lunch on the verandah. Thus it was an early back home, and a request from some that the trip go back onto the list again, hopefully with better weather. We have now changed the tramp for Wednesday, March 13, to Sunrise and beyond.

Trampers: Alison Greer, Russell Greer, Phil Enticott, Dennis Mitchell, Jennie Porter, Paul Exeter, John Burrell, Keith Moretta, Ken Ross, John Marshall and Julia Mackie. Additional trampers to be confirmed.

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
