Revels at Robson’s: Our solstice food-fest goes green

After five hours of pulling up or chopping down wilding pines of all sizes (see the report on that under News), our team made its way to the historic Robson’s Lodge on the Napier-Taihape Road for the club’s annual solstice celebration.

Because Mark had finished earlier, he went ahead and lit the fires – and it was certainly very pleasant walking into such a warm house. To top it off, we caught the fragrance of Ray and Pauline’s mulled wine bubbling away on the wood range.

As soon as we’d had a quick wash, we changed into our ‘green’ attire (Green being the theme for this solstice event) and spent the next five hours around the fire eating lots of nibbles washed down with a drink or two and then – although we had already eaten so much – managing to polish off a two-course dinner, finished with sticky date pudding and a cuppa. Santa arrived bearing gifts, and distributed them to everyone. A few got swapped but folk were generally very happy with what they received.

Sunday morning on the verandah

We were all tucked up in bed even before the rugby final had finished somewhere else, and everyone slept soundly.

Next morning, still full from the previous evening’s meal, we skipped breakfast, boiled the pot for a cuppa, tidied up and headed home.

It was another excellent Solstice weekend, with good company, good volunteer work, good food and a good location. One more mid-winter fest ticked off!

Party people: Di Reid, Alison Greer, Julia Mackie, Mark Jenkins, Ray Slavin and partner Pauline, and revels reporter Sue Martin

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
