Wilding Pines less 1000

November 9, 2021 by Julia Mackie Leave a Comment

The Lakes area, Kuripapango, Kaweka FP. Tuesday 9 November 2021

The group in action

The pioneer Kuripaponga wilding pine group had a great day up at The Lakes on Tuesday 9 November. DoC’s Alan Lee gave everyone some thorough training and information – and the Pine Patrol is raring to go!

Simon was onto them

Our group of ten reckon they nailed about 1000 pines on this first outing. They covered their area Search and Rescue style and got round the two lake edges, finding a fair few there, too, along with the odd bit of broom and willow.

We relaxed by the larger lake for lunch

Graham Leech reports: “This can be a pretty relaxing and fun day – certainly we’ll need to cover all the scrubby bush in time, which is quite hard work and causes a bit of skin damage if unprotected; but a gentle stroll around the lakes or the open tussocky areas still finds the little blighters.  There’s a few trout in the big lake too, so that’s another challenge to be conquered.”

The next planned day is Wednesday 8 December. The group will set dates next year on other days including weekends so some dates can suit everybody.

Keep an eye on www.afoot.co.nz/conservation for other dates and info.  If you are interested in joining us, either on the 8th or otherwise, let Graham or Julia know – we can organise shared transport.

The NTC team: John Dobbs, Simon Hill, Marie Deroles, and Julia Mackie

About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.
