Mauri Oho – Request for tramping gear (Published 4 November 2021)
Kia Ora Napier Tramping Club members,
We are undertaking a three-year Jobs for Nature project in the northern Ruahine range for wildlife recovery in both the backcountry and front country – along the forest park-farmland boundaries and streams that flow from Ruahine.
Our vision is to further protect the wildlife. Expanding the traplines as juveniles fledge into unprotected stream catchment areas of the Ruahine range. A major part of our vision is to reconnect Maori, both hapū and rangitane whānau members, back to the whenua.
Currently, we are in the process of recruiting eight kaimahi (field workers). We are targeting hapu and whānau who live in and around Omahū, Kererū, Waipukurau and Tamatea in Central Hawke’s Bay. Traditionally hapū and whānau have not been involved in tramping or even hunting in the remote backcountry; and hence, have little experience and knowledge of best gear for that wild tops weather.
We are in desperate need of a good supply of gear and wondered if club members have any old or unused tramping gear they would like to donate to our workers, including hapū and rangitane who want to get out there and experience the backcountry?
The Mauri Oho budget covers a basic budget to buy a pack, boots, coat, PLB, and one layer of fleece. We are seeking gear – such as old thermals for a second layer, gaiters, old coats and packs, or any back-up gear – in fact we’ll accept any gear donations from club members.

Covid measures
On trips, mask-wearing in the van must be compulsory for the time being. Some members will struggle with this if they are prone to motion sickness sitting in the van on winding roads; wearing a mask may exacerbate the nauseous feeling.
They can of course make their own arrangements for transport in a private car to the start of the day’s tramp, where you are free to choose not to wear a mask.
Depending on numbers registered for the day’s tramp, it may become uneconomical to take the van. Eight people or less is uneconomical. If this situation arises, we will need to use private vehicles for everyone.
So, if you need or want to take your own vehicle to avoid mask-wearing, please indicate that on the registration spreadsheet at the time you book. Also, if you usually are a van user but have a car you are happy to use if numbers don’t add up, please indicate that. This will give the tramp organiser the information he or she needs to manage transport for us all.
Meetings will require appropriate distancing and the wearing of masks. It is hoped all members will be double-vaccinated by 2022.

Petrol Money Increase
At the NTC meeting on November 4, the club voted in favour of an increase to the petrol money fee to cover increased costs from the provider Cross Country Rentals. With immediate effect the base fee per person for the van will be $25 (and where there are additional costs such as excess kilometres, a higher fee could be set). Please note that on these trips, the private car fee shall be the same as the van fee.
