Te Aratia Walkway, Mahia Peninsula, Saturday 4 November 2023 Banner Photo: Following the Whangawehi River, with native planting to protect the stream The Mahia Peninsula is not really a tramping destination.  But it does have a long walkway the locals call ‘Coast-to-Coast’ linking East to West. The building of this path has been a community… [Read More]

Gannet-free trip to the Cape turns into a hi-tech cliff-hanger

Cape Kidnappers, Wednesday 7 June 2023 Banner Photo: Most of the group at our turn-around point and lunch stop Twenty people descended on the Hygge cafe at Clifton about 10am, which might have surprised the staff. Makairo Track, Waewaepa Range, 11 May 2022 Banner Photo: Bury my Heart at Wounded Knees… The club broke new territory walking this track for the first time. The DoC reserve is a 45-minute drive south-west from Dannevirke and east of Pahiatua. The Makairo Track was once a road linking Kohinui to Coonoor. It was closed… [Read More]

Apiti Track, Mangatewainui River, Ruahine FP, Wednesday 17 March 2021 Banner Photo: The very low river levels, Mangatewainui Stream This tramp blessed us with many experiences. It was not a ‘ho-hum, get the job done’ sort of day. Norsewood has a reputation for being one of the coldest spots in Central Hawke’s Bay. On this… [Read More]

Exploring new territory in unspoilt Waioeka

October 14, 2020 by Bruce Hodgson 1 Comment

Koranga Forks – Tawa Circuit, Waioeka Conservation Area, 12-14 October 2020 Feeling an urge to see an area not visited before, nine of us drove for almost five hours to Moanui road end, about 30km from Matawai on State Highway 2 between Gisborne and Opotiki. The last trip report for some time… Overnight to Maropea Forks Hut

March 22, 2020 by Bruce Hodgson 2 Comments

Sat/Sun 21/22 March, 2020. Maropea Forks Hut, Ruahine Ranges, Map: BK36 We were unaware, as we set off on Saturday morning for our overnight tramp to Maropea Forks Hut, that this would be the last club organised tramp for the foreseeable future. About us

We are a group of like-minded people who love the great outdoors. We tramp mostly in the Hawke’s Bay province, in remote areas such as the Kaweka and Ruahine Ranges; but we also travel longer distances to new places, for longer walks.

The Napier Tramping Club was established in 1974 and has about 70 members. We belong to the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc (FMC) and run Saturday, full-weekend and Wednesday tramps, every fortnight.

Interested in joining us?

Enjoy the great outdoors, keep fit and get to know others with similar interests.
